Self Study Course Versus Live Class
- By Blake

Let’s discuss the benefits of taking a self study course versus live class.
There is a misconception that the best way to study for the PE exam is by attending a live class and that it’s superior to studying with a self-paced study course.
I believe the opposite. I think that a self-paced study course is a better option for most people than a live class.
Let me explain why.
1. Problems With a Live Class Study Course
The perceived safety blanket that is the classroom setting is primarily an illusion for most people.
There are usually two main reasons why someone chooses a live classroom course. The first is the presence of an instructor to dissect and explain complex problems and subject matter. The second is to assist with the self-discipline required to regularly study by “being forced” to attend the lectures.
I think these are overblown and false benefits for a few reasons:
- With even a tiny bit of self discipline, control and desire to become a professional engineer can maintain consistency a self-paced course. Especially when you have a bulletproof study plan.
- A live course typically spends the same time on each subject. No matter how well you know a subject, you will be forced to spend an entire lecture on it. You may not need that much time on a particular subject. You may rather use that time on a subject that you need more work on. A live class has no way of knowing your strengths and weaknesses and how to tailor your time most efficiently. Why sit through a lecture you don’t need?
- Being in a live classroom or remote viewing of a live classroom portends to have the benefit of interactivity with the professor. Unless you’re that kid who sits in the front row and constantly asks the professor questions (usually within 2 minutes of class ending), you’re probably not going to engage the professor as much as you think you will. With the support that my course offers, you’ll have no trouble understanding the subject material and example problems, with the excellently explained solutions as well as the superior support offered with my course.
Not to mention the fact that these live study courses cost so much!
2. Benefits of a Self Study Course Versus Live Class
There are numerous benefits to choosing a self study course versus live class that you have to be in attendance for. Let’s go over them in more detail.
2.1 Superior results
First of all, a self study course offers superior results. I passed the PE exam the first time with an 85 by using the tools and techniques I put in my course. My course is specifically tailored to the NCEES specifications for the PE exam so you know it’s covering everything on the test. This study course is proven to help you pass the PE exam the first time! Most of all, I only want the best for myself and I want you to pass the first time, so I put everything I have into this course to make it the best that exists.
2.2 Cost
Secondly, there is alot of overhead associated with the traditional classroom setting. A quality, online, self-directed course delivers the same instruction without all the extra fat attached to it (that YOU have to pay for). The “top dogs’ in the PE study course space charge upwards of $2,000 for their course! My course is much less than half that but BEATS other courses in quality. There is no comparison.
2.3 Flexible and convenient schedule
With an online course, you don’t have to be in a classroom at a certain time. Fighting traffic, traveling to a different city, sitting uncomfortably in some classroom all day are issues with a live class. Not with an online course.
2.4 No sitting through long boring tedious classes
If you hated sitting through long, boring, kill-me-now lectures in college, it will be 10x worse now that you are out of school. With an online course, you can relax comfortably in your own home. No need to suffer through boring and painful lessons again. You’re on the cusp of becoming a professional engineer, you deserve better!
2.5 Individual and tailored curriculum
Also, you have the option of tailoring your studying however you want with an online course. You don’t have to go in their order and focus the same amount of time on each subject. If you want to spend more time in certain places, you can. If you want to speed through stronger subjects, you can.
2.6 Better interactivity
With a course designed to be viewed on a desktop as well as mobile screens such as phones and tablets, you have a better experience. You have better interactivity, cleaner lines, better diagrams and explanations. It’s a much better experience than watching a video of an old guy droning on at a whiteboard for hours.
2.7 Control and autonomy
Finally, you have complete control and autonomy with an online self study course versus live class. As mentioned previously, you have control of your time and where to put your efforts. It’s the best of all worlds.
3: Self Study Course Versus Live Class – The Bottom Line
Taking a self-directed study course versus live class is the way to go for most people. The benefits are unparalleled. Especially when you consider the overblown “benefits” of a live classroom course. Check out our aPEx HVAC self study course to learn more and to get started.
